The path to self awareness

Life really is an oddly place. We expend time trying to save money for when we have free time, we can enjoy our sweated money. But at the same time, we are always looking for rewards in the present, for the long time on working, for the long time stuck in traffic. This rewards, bought with the money we don't have, with credit card, split in so many months that we start to work, actually, to pay the bills, and no longer for our oldness.

At some point, the things we own start to own us, that's true, once you can no longer leave that job you don't like, because the bills you have to pay. Because you are not living for you any more, you are living to pay the things you bought, and so, you have a new boss, named everything you bought and didn't payed yet.

Why do we do it to our selves? Why the desire to own things we don't need, to impress people we don't like with money we don't have became our bosses? And how to break the circle?

First of all. Stop what you are doing. Take a day off at work, do not stay at home, or you'll be catched by the TV. Go some place where you can think and rethink. Take some old fashion paper notebook (don't bought one! Use any paper you have. Even toilet paper, if you needed), a pen/pencil, some thing to write over, and get out. Say at your job and to your family that you'll not be able to answer phone calls. It's just for a day, so don't worry.

People would say that a park is a good place to go, but only if you live in a very fortunate city, otherwise, beggars can became a problem. And hookers. Go to a small café, with a good table. Ask yourself the biggest drink you can order, so you can stay longer without been disturbed. A bottle of water can do the job. Catch your notebook and start thinking:

1) What you liked most on your youth? Did you liked to play video-games? Read? Write? To do some sport? How are your memories about your childhood?

2) While you were at school, which disciplines did you went better? Mathematics? Physics? Languages? What did you liked most?

3) What are you doing now that makes you unhappy? What makes you happy at your job? (don't make a fool of yourself, no one likes to work, but we always try to choose things that we like most, among all the possibilities).

4) Write down in this order: things from your childhood that you liked most, the disciplines at school that you went better and the likes and dislikes (at list 5 at each side) from your current job.

5) Now, think that your job may not be the problem. How's your personal life? Do you have time to met friends? To see your relatives and your parents? Do you have time to your own? Thinking about your current life, write down your top five likes and dislikes from your current personal life.

At this time, your bottle of water should be gone, by far, and all we get is a list of our consciousness of desires and unhappines. But this is not enough. The next best thing to do is to go to a walk, and rest your mind. The mind find solutions while thinking other things. This is called natural associative thinking. This way Archimedes could determinated how to solve the problem with the gold crown of his emperor, and ran naked throught the streets of his city screaming Eureka! Eureka! He was at his bath when the solution hit him like a rock.

If a movie theater, or better yet a museum is at your walk range, go for it. Otherwise, just go circling your block (or the block where you are), close looking for the architecture of the buildings. Think on how that buildings were build. Do one hour at least of any other activity than think on your recent list. You can even read something, like a book or a magazine, if it is not related to your work or personal life. Right now, we want to leave our mind to think on her own way on our problems. Let your mind free of conscience's thinking on your list. The longer, better.

Ant'Z, the movie from Woody Allen, tell us a story about an ant named Z, and how this ant expend in one day long (a life time in an ant time), to discover that the life that he wasn't enjoying was the very life he wanted, he just wanted to choose for it, instead of be tossed in that position. This movie and many others like this, talking about the journey of self awareness. Just like what we are doing right now, without destroying the status quo of an entire society like the Allen's movie.

Once you walked, ate something, went into a store of any kind, few hours after you started, you can go back to that same small cafe at you were. Take another good drink to yourself and reopen that list you made.

All that you wrote still look the same? Do you have the same feelings about what you wrote you liked or hated? Is there anything you would like to change? You will probably find out that things you hated, now are quite bearable, and things you liked, now doesn't look likable at all. Give one hour to yourself to see what you want to change, add or remove from your list. But don't worry, you would not be able to find your path yet, but this time, try to register the list in our mind, and when you get home, take a shower, and rethink on your list. No longer than ten minutes, please, don't forget the enviroment...

Just like the movie Inception, what we are trying to do is to give hints from your consciousness to your unconsciousness of what you like, dislike and want to change. We are planting a very small idea, that can change it all.

Keep the list in your pocket, and next week we will start from here. Have a good week.

I love the way you did presented the question about find your own path in your life. I hope I can find my own, do you see, money and mansions doesn't make one man happy, with or without dominican maids... We need to do what we love for a living, otherwise, it's not living, is surviving...
